H o m e       P o r t f o l i o       C o n t a c t       N e w s   R e v i e w s

Gail Russell was a painter and printmaker before she became a photographer.

She had her first one woman show of paintings and silk-screens at fifteen years of age. Russell went on to study at The Albright School of Fine Arts, Buffalo, N.Y. and Pratt and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In 1968 she changed mediums and apprenticed to Richard Davis, Fashion Photographer and continued to live and work in the Connecticut and New York area until she moved West.

Photo Artist Gail Russell has lived in Arroyo Hondo, NM since the summer of 1978. In 1987 she founded the Adopt A Grandparent Program, a nonprofit organization, which is still helping Native American elders and their families on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota today.

Russell works in black and white, sepia toned and color photography, and digital imagery. Her images of Southwestern Culture, Landscapes, Plant life, Temples and Antiquities, have been in private collections, museums, galleries, and in the pages of national and international magazines for the past twenty five years.

Russell's oil colors on sepia toned images are done with a uniqueness that has become a trademark.

Sometimes, her architectural approach to every day things, uncover meanings not there at first glance. Her work Spotlights colorful ceremonials, contrasting with the simple everyday activities of peoples living in tradition. Striking images of ancient sites and landscapes, her usage of light sometimes transmits a spiritual message.
